The Art of Salt Spring IslandSalt Spring has been named one of the top artistic communities in North America. You can view and buy work of world-class artists of every type. You can attend performances and exhibitions, and enjoy the vibrant local culture. You can browse local galleries or visit the artists' own studios.
You'll find work by artists in contemporary and traditional styles of painting, jewellry, basketry, fabric arts, weaving, paper-making, sculpture, photography, pottery, glasswork, carving, metal work and ceramics. You'll also find fine Asian and European collectibles and antiques, and excellent examples of the art of local First Nations peoples.
Artcraft in Ganges is open all summer and displays crafts for several hundred Artisans on the Island. The Saturday Market, located in the Park in Ganges, is famous for displaying local art, crafts and garden products. Be sure to follow the self-guided Gallery Walk around the town of Ganges. And take the complementary Studio Tour a not-to-be-missed visit to 31 resident properties of artists who showcase their work in their own home studios. People literally fly thousands of miles and stay just overnight to pick up a desired piece by a local artist. There's a concentration and level of art and culture here far beyond what the size of the community would indicate. You can buy a beautiful little present for a few dollars, or pick up a small item of gallery-quality work for many thousands of dollars.
If you love art and crafts, you're sure to find much to love on Salt Spring Island. |
